Kynurenine-Pyruvate Aminotransferase in Rat Kidney and Brain

Abstract

Kynurenic acid, the product of kynurenine aminotransferase, has increasingly attracted attention because of its physiological effects in the brain, such as blockade of the neurotoxicity induced by quinolinic acid in rat (Foster et al., 1984) or decrease of the stroke size and deficits in human (Germano et al., 1987). Also, it can protect neonatal rats from hypoxia-induced brain edema (Simon et al., 1986).
