Neonatal brain injuries which occur under hypoxia, ischemia, hypoglycemia and trauma (Rothman and Olney, 1986; Simon et al., 1986; Ikonomidou et al., 1988; Mclntosh et al., 1988) have recently been suggested to be mediated through activation of excitatory amino acid systems. In particular, neurodestructive changes in the developing brain are thought to be due to stimulation of N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptors (Simon et al., 1986; McDonald et al., 1988).
