Ribonuclease H and Primer tRNA Binding Activities of HIV Reverse Transcriptase as Therapeutic Targets

  • Chapter
Advances in Molecular Biology and Targeted Treatment for AIDS

Abstract

Human immunodeficiency virus reverse transcriptase (RT, deoxynucleoside-triphosphate: DNA deoxynucleotidyltransferase (RNA-directed), E.C. 2.7.7.49.) has been the subject of intense investigation over the last 5 years, with the goal of developing a safe and effective therapy to stem the progression of AIDS. Although success has been achieved with inhibitors of viral replication such as AZT1–3, the rapid emergence of tolerance to this drug4 is a clear indication that new and improved therapies will be in constant demand for a considerable period.
