Abstract
This chapter begins with a psychological analysis of the totalitarian system that is based on Marlin’s experience of growing up in Czechoslovakia, “behind the Iron Curtain.” This is followed by analysis of reasons why democracy again has a chance in Czechoslovakia after the Velvet Revolution of 1989. The second section is a discussion of the cause and effects of McCarthyism in America, an era that began in 1950 when Smith was 21; Smith gratefully acknowledges Marlin’s psychoanalytic comments on material in this section. Change in the United States, in response to change in the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, was an emerging story as this chapter was being written.
Biographical note: One of us grew up behind the Iron Curtain, the other, in the United States. Separately, we researched the material this chapter draws on, feeling a need to learn the truth about formative political history. After sharing our experiences informally, we developed a more integrated view of and deeper understanding of the dynamics of political choice in both the East and the West.
