Scrotal Hyperthermia: Frequency in an Infertile Population and Associated Alterations in Testicular Function

  • Chapter
Temperature and Environmental Effects on the Testis

Abstract

Two populations were involved in this study. The infertile one was composed of all men (n = 555; 22–52 years old) presenting at our Center from December 1985 to March 1989 for conjugal infertility of at least two years duration, and whose partners had no evidence of abnormalities likely to cause infertility. The second population was made up of 78 fertile men consulting during the same period and who were either requesting a vasectomy (n = 45) or were candidate sperm donors (n = 33); these men ranged in age from 26 to 49 yr and had fathered at least one child. All these unselected men were subjected to genital examination which included research of a clinical varicocele and of testicular histories (orchitis, cryptorchidism and surgery for varicocele).
