Abstract

Candidiasis is the most frequently encountered opportunistic fungal infection. It is caused by a number of Candida species with Canida albicans being the most frequent etiologic agent. Candida species are responsible for a number of different types of infections in normal and immunocompromised patients. The repeated recovery of yeasts from multiple specimens from the same patient usually indicates colonization. The simultaneous recovery of the same species of yeast from several body sites including urine is a good indicator of disseminated infection and subsequent development of fungemia1,2.
