Abstract

Recent advances in the fluorometry of intracellular Ca2+ concentration ([Ca2+]i) enabled detecting the time course and the two-demensional distribution of [Ca2+ ]i in single isolated cells as well as the tissue preparations (Kudo and Ogura, 1986; Nohmi et al., 1989). Since the role of Ca2+ on the modulation of the efficacy of synaptic transmission (synaptic plasticity) has been suggested from physiological and biochemical studies, the methods have been applied to neuronal cells in culture and brain slices, and elevations of [Ca2+]i during neuronal activity have directly been shown (Connor et al., 1988; Kudo et al., 1987).
