Abstract
Testing the potential toxicity of mixtures is a difficult task compounded by the fact that very little is generally known about the constituents of most complex mixtures. New applications of existing methods are needed to investigate the potential adverse health effects of both simple and complex mixtures. Our laboratory has been investigating the effects of mixtures on the formation and persistence of adducts on DNA by a known toxicant along with resultant changes in metabolic enzymes as a means of studying the effects of mixtures. This approach is based on the fact that most multi-component and simple environmental mixtures have many components in common, and common effects may thus allow prediction of actions of mixtures.
