Abstract

Previous research into the specification and implementation of an Embedded User Model (EUM) within a number of small adaptive systems has lead to the recognition of the need for a software toolkit for constructing such models. This “User Modelling Shell” is similar to the concept of an Expert System Shell and will provide both generic and individual user models suitable for different types of interaction and application.

A description of the requirements of a User Modelling Shell is presented, together with consideration of the form of the EUMs themselves. The practical issues which present themselves include the question of where to site the User Model within either a general User Interface Management System or within certain system architectures; that of which type of user features can be modelled in an appropriate form; the problems of eliciting user information, and the evaluation both of the User Modelling Shell and the adaptive systems themselves.
