Abstract
Cigarette smoking has been implicated in epidemiologic studies as one of the risk factors for clinical coronary heart disease. It is not possible to tell from such studies if smoking is associated with the underlying development of atherosclerosis or with the precipitation of acute occlusive events through some totally different mechanisms such as clot formation.
