Atherosclerosis is essentially a disease of humans in which lipid and fibrinogen accumulate in the subintimal layers of large elastic arteries and medium sized muscular arteries. Although not a new disease, the prevalence.and importance of atherosclerosis in the Western World have increased dramatically this century; a change, which coincides with an increase in the usage of cigarettes.
