Viral Persistence and Immune Impairment in Schizophrenia

  • Chapter
Psychiatry and Biological Factors

Abstract

Investigations of viral persistence and immune system states in mental diseases have been summarized in two recent books (Morozov, 1983; Kurstak et al., 1987). The latter contains data on antibody levels to tick-borne encephalitis, herpes, measles viruses, and other indicators of humoral immunity in schizophrenic patients and healthy individuals living in West Siberia and the Far East. Data obtained during a long-term systematic study on viral persistence, humoral and cell immunity, and interferon in schizophrenics and healthy donors from the abovementioned regions are given in this chapter.
