Abstract
Pollution problems are common on the North Atlantic coast, stemming from the input of metals, petroleum-derived hydrocarbons, insecticides and herbicides, as well as many other anthropogenic and natural chemicals. Many of these substances are known to be carcinogenic or mutagenic. The occurrence of toxicants in finfish and shellfish habitats is known to produce acute effects, and in addition may predispose organisms to tissue damage, neoplasms and environmentally induced diseases (Sindermann, 1979).
