Chemical Pattern Dynamics by Chemically Induced Hydrodynamic Flow

Pattern formation due to the coupling between chemical reaction and hydrodynamic flow has recently attracted increasing attention. 1,2 Examples are “mosaic” patterns and the deformation and irregular decomposition of chemical waves observed in an uncovered layer of the unstirred Belousov-Zhabotinskii (BZ) solution. Various attempts have been made to explain the origin of the structures by the effects of convective flow caused by evaporative cooling and/or the exothermicity of the reaction.
