Abstract
Proteins of the S-100 family, S-100a0 (αα), (αß), and S-100b (ßß) belong to the superfamily of Ca2+-binding proteins of the EF-hand type (for review see Donato, 1986). S-100 proteins are widely distributed in animal tissues, yet they are not ubiquitous. In the brain, ~ 85% of S-100 is soluble in the cytoplasm and 15% of it is associated with membranes.
