Abstract

Reduced glutathione (GSH) is known to play a pivotal role in the cellular oxidant defence system and is indispensable for preventing lipid peroxidation by free radicals and oxygen. In this respect several protective cytosolic and membrane bound enzymes have been described which utilize GSH as substrate or as cofactor. The respective contribution of each of these enzymes, like GSH S-transferases, selenium dependent GSH peroxidase and the selenium containing phospholipid hydroperoxide GSH peroxidase, to the oxidant defence has not been fully clarified yet1.
