Abstract
The fact that the father of both hemodialysis [1] and plasmapheresis [2] is one and the same, and that he proposed both forms of therapy in the same year, provides an historical link between the two modes of treatment. The advent of on line centrifugation systems for apheresis in the mid-fifties, however, moved this new technique into the domain of hematologists. Plasma donation procedures have improved immensely in recent years. They are usually performed by blood banks and as such will not be considered here. This survey will deal only with therapeutic apheresis, which nowadays is practiced both by hematologists and nephrologists, and has become an integral part of the training programs in both disciplines.
