Abstract

Postnatal growth, regulated by pituitary growth hormone, and mediated by IGF-I, is controlled by the central nervous system. The mechanisms underlying the regulation of this system are under intense study in many laboratories. By analogy with other pituitary hormones, GH secretion may be controlled by negative feedback, either by GH itself, or by the IGFs produced in diverse tissues in response to GH.1 This feedback signal may be received by the hypothalamus, the pituitary gland, or possibly by higher brain centers. Responses to these regulatory signals would necessarily require mediation by specific receptors for IGFs. Such receptors have been localized and characterized within both the hypothalamus and pituitary gland; the results of these studies are reviewed herein.
