Abstract

Purine precursors used in the synthesis of nucleic acids are produced by a well-defined sequence of enzymatic reactions. The characterization of this pathway and its regulation in bacteria and lower eukaryotes has been due, in large part, to the availability of auxotrophic mutants defective in purine biosynthesis.
