Abstract

In recent years, it was shown that mitochondria actively metabolize purine deoxynucleosides. It was documented that both deoxyguanosine and deoxyadenosine were phosphorylated by mitochondrial enzymes (1–6). In the case of deoxyguanosine, intact mitochondria formed dGMP, dGDP and dGTP (3, 5). dAMP was detected in intact mitochondria which were supplemented with deoxyadenosine (6). Regarding the degradation of purine deoxynucleosides by mitochondrial enzymes, adenosine deaminase activity was noted in intact and fractured mitochondria (6, 7).
