Abstract

Quasar absorption spectra may offer a clue to the distribution of intergalactic matter clouds at cosmological distances. Essentially three types of absorption lines can be identified:

  1. 1

    - Broad absorption lines (or “throughs”) of highly ionized elements probably connected with the quasar phenomenon itselfes.

  2. 2

    - Heavy element systems, containing Ly (α if in the range of the spectrum, and stemming from gas oh near solar composition. They are characterized by a wide range of ionization states.

  3. 3

    - Numerous lines of the Ly (α “forest” on the short wavelength side of the Ly (α emission line and only a small contamination of metal or molecular lines.
