Cytoprotective Effect of Isotonic Mannitol at Low Oxygen Tension

Abstract

The protective mechanism of mannitol in the postischemic kidney in vivo remains incompletely defined. Mannitol infusion has been reported to prevent postischemic renal failure by vascular effects such as an arterial vasodilation (improving oxgen transport to postischemic renal tissue) as well as by an increased glomerular filtration rate and an enforced osmotic diuresis which, in turn, may have reduced tubular obstructions (Burke et al,, 1983; Zager et al., 1985).
