Capillary Blood Flow and Local Oxygen Supply in Skeletal Muscle During Acute Haemodilution with Hydroxyethyl Starch

Part of the book series: Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology ((AEMB,volume 248))

Abstract

The use of colloidal infusions to maintain plasma volume in patients has increased in recent years due to the risk of infections from donated blood. The need for infusions which are effective over relatively long periods led to the introduction of high molecular weight solutions. However, by increasing the retention time in this way, the viscosity of the blood is also raised and this may have a deleterious effect on capillary blood flow.
