Abstract
Animal hearts are commonly used as models for human tissue in studies defining conditions for the preservation of heart tissue destined for transplantion. Human atrial appendages, removed during open heart surgery, have been used on occasion to determine the optimum temperature for the preservation of grafts prior to transplant [1,2]. We use 31P and 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) to follow the time course of metabolite levels in human atrial appendages to gain a better understanding of tissue energetics under various preservation conditions.
