Abstract
For women of childbearing age today, reproductive biology is one among many determinants of destiny. Women may choose to act on their biological capacities and have children. They may choose to delay or reject childbearing in framing their life plan. The subjects of this chapter, infertile women, find their wish to bear children countermanded by their bodies. They do not have the option of realizing a biological procreative potential. For many infertile patients, biology is a painful limitation on destiny.
An earlier version of this chapter was delivered as part of a symposium “Psychoanalysis and Childbearing: Is Biology Still Destiny?” at the annual meetings of the American Psychological Association, Los Angeles, August 26, 1985.
