Abstract

During the past decade there has been a proliferation of knowledge concerning non-insulin dependent diabetes. International acceptance of a classification of diabetes has contributed to this development in that non-insulin dependent diabetes (NIDDM) was clearly separated from insulin-dependent diabetes (IDDM), and the term impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) was introduced to describe a category of subjects who had glucose tolerance which was above the limits seen in normal healthy young adults, but which fell below the levels considered diagnostic of NIDDM (1). The diagnostic criteria for NIDDM were also reconsidered, first by the National Diabetes Data Group (NDDG) and later by the World Health Organization (WHO). This resulted in internationally accepted criteria for the diagnosis of diabetes.
