Abstract
Both Type I and Type II diabetes mellitus are phenotypically heterogeneous. These two diseases are clearly dependent on genetic susceptibility which is also quite likely heterogeneous (1). During the last decade, findings of several HLA antigen associations in humans with Type I diabetes and clear evidence of autoimmunity in both animal models of Type I diabetes and in humans with Type I diabetes, coupled with the apparent absence of such attributes in Type II diabetes, have led to the belief that these two disorders are unrelated. This conclusion, however, may have been premature. We present in this report epidemiologic and genetic evidence suggesting that at least a subset of Type II diabetes shares genetic susceptibility with Type I diabetes.
