Abstract
Binding of foreign antigens to the surface of resting B lymphocytes activates and induces them to proliferate, producing an expanded and functionally responsive population. In vitro, the initial steps of this activation process can be mimicked by crosslinking surface immunoglobulins (Ig), which function as antigen receptors on the plasma membrane of B lym phocytes. Crosslinking can be readily achieved using antibodies directed against Ig (anti-Ig). In most of the experiments discussed below, human tonsillar B cells were activated with antibodies against IgM, which is present on the surface of over 60% of the cells.
