Abstract
During the past two decades evidence has accumulated which indicates that platelet production from megakaryocytes or megakaryocyte precursor cells is regulated by humoral factors1–4. Many factors which are suspected to be involved in megakaryocytopoiesis and/or platelet formation have been reported (Tables I and II). Some of these factors have been purified to homogeneity or molecularly cloned, and their biochemical Natures and biological activities on hematopoietic cells, including cells of the megakaryocyte lineage, have been investigated. Among these factors are megakaryocyte colony-stimulating factor (Meg- CSF)5–7, thrombocytopoiesis-stimulating factor or thrombopoietin (Tpo)8–10, interleukin 3 (IL- 3)11,12 multi-colony-stimulating factor (multi-CSF)13–17, granulocyte/macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF)12,18,19 and erythropoietin (Epo)5,20,21.
