Abstract
The Vatican’s Declaration on Euthanasia (1980) highlights the fact that technological advances not only increase the capacity of medicine to cure and prolong life but bring with them complex and trying issues of the appropriateness of those treatments to specific cases. The moral dilemma now has become not how to apply the treatments, but whether to do so. When the decision is made to withhold or withdraw treatment, it is sometimes met with unreflective charges of euthanasia, suicide, or murder.
