Use of Anencephalic Infants as Organ Donors Crossing a Threshold

  • Chapter
Pediatric Brain Death and Organ/Tissue Retrieval

Abstract

My interest in this area began in June 1986, when I received a call from a pediatric neurologist on the east coast. She called me in my capacity as chairman of the Ethics and Humanities Committee of the American Academy of Neurology because she had become quite concerned when she had heard of professionals involved in the transplant movement discuss the increasingly common practice of using anencephalics as organ donors.

Dr. Cranford gave the original conference presentation. However, Dr. Roberts contributed substantially to the original research and thinking on this subject and agrees with the opinions expressed in this chapter. Thus, it was decided to coauthor the paper but to retain the first-person narrative.
