Abstract

By repetitively dividing an object into smaller and smaller parts, one eventually comes to a dimer. A dimer obviously has different properties than the object we started with. It is not reasonable to think of a dimer as a semiconductor or of a dimer melting! Clearly, there is a minimum particle size below which we have to change our solid state language to a molecular language. But at what cluster size must we make this change, does this critical size vary with the property being considered, and how do the chemical properties fit into this picture? Recent advances in experimental techniques have made it possible to generate very small particles or clusters (containing only a few atoms) of virtually any element in the periodic table.(1,2) Unlike the cluster compounds studied using more conventional inorganic chemistry approaches, these are isolated gas phase species that generally do not have ligands. Furthermore, they are free of substrate interactions that hinder matrix isolation studies.
