Abstract

The study of gas phase ion-molecule reactions has been greatly facilitated in recent years by the rapid development of tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS). Originally promoted as a method for analysis of complex mixtures, MS/MS is now also used to determine ion structure, as well as reaction cross sections, thermodynamics, and kinetics.(1) MS/MS enables an ion to be selected quickly and accurately, with greater sensitivity and specificity than is possible in traditional mass spectrometry, and then allows the reactions in which the ion participates to be followed. The availability of new instrumentation(2) and the development of new methods(3) for MS/MS have made tandem mass spectrometry especially useful for the study of gas phase ion chemistry.
