Abstract
Some researchers maintain that conversion symptoms are produced by the central nervous system, whereas psychosomatic symptoms are usually produced by the autonomic and neuroendocrine systems. According to Cannon (1920), animals react to pain, fear, hunger, and rage by changes in gland secretion, as well as by disturbances in muscle tone and in the cardiovascular and gastrointestinal systems, all under the control of the autonomic nervous system.
