Abstract

As described in Chapter 3, psychoanalysis has had a long tradition in dealing with psychosomatic disorders. According to Freud, physical energy is the arch source of mental energy. When the outlets for mental energies are blocked, some amount of these energies is discharged along physical paths in hysterical laughing and screaming, fainting, diarrhea, throwing up, and so on (Breuer & Freud, 1895/1955).
