Abstract
One of the most controversial issues facing all levels of government today concerns current policies that provide equal employment opportunities for women and minorities in the United States labor force. The legality of previously enacted affirmative action legislation has recently been questioned on constitutional grounds, whereas research continues to confirm that women and members of minority populations are underrepresented in higher paying jobs and overrepresented in jobs that offer low economic rewards and few opportunities for advancement. This situation is particularly crucial for female minority group members, who carry the double burden of gender and color into an already segregated labor market.
