Abstract

The free electron laser (FEL) is certainly one of the most interesting sources of coherent radiation to have been developed over the last few years. The working principle of this device is completely different from that of “conventional” lasers. The active medium, indeed, does not consist of atoms of molecules but is a beam of relativistic electrons. In addition, the gain mechanism is essentially classical and arises from the interaction between electrons, laser field, and a spatially periodic magnetic field provided by a special device usually called “Undulator Magnet” (UM).
