Gene Expression in Muscle

The Role of Small RNAs in the Expression of Muscle-Specific Proteins

Abstract

It has been proposed1 and a great deal of evidence has accumulated that gene expression in eukaryotes may result from the use of a variety of regulatory mechanisms ranging from the recognition of specific DNA sequences to differential turnover rates of proteins. Such a cascade of controls ultimately defines the phenotype of any given cell type. Likewise, muscle cells will utilize a particular set of regulatory mechanisms to synthesize, assemble, and maintain the proteins that constitute the contractile apparatus. This, of course, must involve a sequential and tissue-specific expression of the various isoforms of these muscle-specific proteins during development.
