The Role of Peyer’s Patches in Intestinal Humoral Immune Responses is Limited to Memory Formation

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology ((AEMB,volume 216 A))

Abstract

The interaction of antigens with the mucosal immune system in the gut has been studied extensively. It has become clear that depending on the type of antigen, the dose and the frequency of administration the immune response can vary between a state of tolerance (1,2) and extensive cellular or humoral reactivity (3–5). Peyer’s patches (PP) are thought to play a crucial role in the regulation of these immune responses. This function has been attributed to PP, e.g., by the presence of M cells (specialized epithelial cells in the follicle associated epithelium), which sample antigens from the gut lumen (6).
