Abstract

At least three chromosomal loci code for class II transplantation antigens in humans; HLA-DR, -DP and -DQ. These antigens have been implicated to be critical restriction elements in various immune reactions. It is, however, far from clear how and where the class II antigens perform their functions. Available in vivo and in vitro data suggest that class II antigens are constitive cell membrane components on certain types of cells such as dendritic cells of the spleen and the Langerhans cell of the epidermis (1,2). Furthermore, class II antigens can be induced by gamma interferon and other stimuli on a variety of epithelial and endothelial cells that do not always express these antigens (3).
