Abstract

Class II (la) molecules of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) are integral membrane glycoproteins found, in normal circumstances, on cells of various lineages throughout the body. Their expression may be induced on other cell types however, by inflammatory mediators, for example, γ interferon (1). They function in the immune response to restrict the presentation of protein antigens to immunoregulatory T cells (2). They also act as auto- and allo-antigens in mixed lymphocyte responses (3).
