Studies on the Applicability of NSF/PRA Sponsored Research to the Management of Specific Risk Situations

Abstract

The applicability of the results of several NSF/PRA sponsored grants are examined in terms of specific risk situations which, among them, introduce most of the attributes frequently used in characterizing risks or stakeholder concerns and values. The risk situations used for case studies are the following:

  • asbestos in schools

  • hazardous chemical waste sites

  • indoor air pollution

  • transportation of common hazardous materials by rail or truck

  • contaminants in drinking water

  • the proposed construction of a plant which stores or employs

  • large quantities of a chemical like dioxin

A decision analyst, a lawyer, a philosopher, and a psychologist, all former and/or current principal investigators under NSF/PRA grants, have participated in the study first by providing selected papers and specific comments on the manner in which their work relates to the management of the specific risk situations. After two rounds of interchange of ideas by mail, a workshop was held involving the four NSF PIs, two individuals involved in actual management of some of the risks under consideration, and the UCLA group, including a consultant who provided a different psychological perspective. The results of the overall study, including recommendations for future research, are summarized in this paper.
