Abstract
The existence in mammalian cells of two ATP-providing systems, as well as DNA and protein synthesis, both inside and outside the mitochondrial compartment, implies sensitive control and regulation between the two compartments. Recent studies have revealed a complex organization at the mitochondrial periphery responsible for this regulation, in which the outer membrane pore, the enzymes in the peripheral mitochondrial compartment, and the peripheral part of the inner membrane (i.e., inner boundary membrane) are involved.
