Abstract

One of the most important enzymes of cell metabolism is the PDC2, which acts as a link between carbohydrate catabolism and, via the tricarboxylic acid cycle, the energy production. Due to this central role, the enzyme is subject to a great number of regulatory influences. Pyruvate and its precursors activate the enzyme complex, while acetyl CoA and metabolites derived from this product, such as tricarboxylic acid cycle intermediates and the high-energy compounds GTP and ATP, are inhibitors (Schwartz et al., 1968; Shen and Atkinson, 1970; Bisswanger, 1972; Bisswanger and Henning, 1971).
