Abstract
The citric acid (Krebs) cycle is a central metabolic pathway which occurs almost ubiquitously throughout Nature. Its basic two-fold function of providing energy and biosynthetic intermediates, together with its fundamental chemical unity across widely different organisms, have masked a remarkable diversity in the fine details of the enzymes of the cycle and of the regulatory mechanisms which may operate to control than. That diverse organisms may make different use of, or place different emphasis on, the separate functions of the cycle, and may therefore regulate the pathway in distinct ways, poses the possibility that organisms may differ in their organization of the enzymic apparatus of the cycle.
