Abstract

The etiology and pathogenesis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis are still in debate. Among various hypotheses from different laboratories, some in vitro studies have discussed the possibility of the presence of a deleterious factor (or factors) in the serum of ALS patients against cultured spinal cord explants[1-3]. Other workers could not confirm such findings[4-6]. The potential significance of such a possibility and the discrepancy between the results of these studies have motivated us to address the same question, with some difference in the employed techniques as described below.
