Enzymatic Pathways for Platelet-Activating Factor, Related Alkyl Glycerolipids, and Their Precursors

  • Chapter

Abstract

The purpose of this chapter is to provide a succinct overview of the enzymatic reaction steps for alkyl glycerolipids and lipid precursors affiliated with the biosynthesis and catabolism of platelet-activating factor (PAF). Only the principal distinguishing features of the enzymes are summarized since detailed coverage of the metabolism of PAF (Lee and Snyder, 1985; Snyder, 1982, 1985a) and of ether lipids in general (Hajra, 1983; Horrocks and Sharma, 1982; Snyder, 1985b; Snyder et al., 1985a) has appeared in recent reviews or is discussed in other chapters of this book. This presentation is intended to serve as a quick and concise reference to the individual enzymatic reactions involving PAF and related ether-linked lipids. A composite pathway that illustrates the interrelationship of these reaction steps is also included.
