Abstract
With the broadening of the traditional biomedical model of disease to include behavioural, psychological and social aspects of health and illness (Lipowski, 1977) an increased need has arisen for the assessment of these components as part of the evaluation of health-related outcomes and predictors. This chapter will focus on the assessment of cognitive processes in illness behaviour and will present a number of issues which are current concerns in the field and which relate in a direct manner to any endeavour associated with the measurement of cognitive processes. These are questions regarding which types of thoughts or cognitive contents we are interested in knowing about, what type of framework, if any, exists for the organization of cognitive assessment procedures and how true a reflection is cognitive assessment of what subjects or patients are really thinking.
