Abstract
The intense interest that has been focused around legal abortion in the United States has had some extraordinarily beneficial side effects. Perhaps the most important has been the systematic scientific monitoring of abortion morbidity and mortality. Christopher Tietze (to whom this seminar and paper were dedicated) was the patron saint of abortion surveillance. The Joint Program for the Study of Abortion (JPSA) was the first to look at the medical consequences of legal abortion. His pioneering work was continued and expanded by the Abortion Surveillance Division of the Centers for Disease Control (Cates, Grimes, 1981a, 1981b; Grimes, Cates, 1979; Peterson et al., 1981). In addition to the national data, in-depth analysis was provided by comprehensive reviews of the performance of some of the larger not-for-profit freestanding abortion centers (Burnhill, 1978a).
