Abstract
The specific diagnosis of human influenza depends on the recovery of virus from human tissue or secretions, the demonstration of viral antigens in infected cells or secretions, or the measurement of specific immunologic response. The present chapter is not intended as a laboratory manual but reviews and summarizes currently available diagnostic methods and approaches. Procedural details can be found in Concepts and Procedures for Laboratory Based Influenza Surveillance (Centers for Disease Control, 1982) and in Laboratory Diagnosis of Viral Infections (Lennette, 1985) (also see Dowdle and Coleman, 1974).
